The name of the technology: AquaChip - fast water safety test
Challenge: Water must meet strict safety criteria, especially depending on its use. In the case of drinking water, compliance of criteria is more or less common. In the case of service water, for example from own wells, water is not regularly tested and treated and therefore, high quality is not secured. In the case of aquaristics, the situation is much more complicated, as there is necessary of special water treatment.

Determination of water composition and pollutants is nowadays realized by analytical laboratories. However, the procedure is time consuming, relatively expensive and with limited availability. In the case of aquaristics, there is necessary of use of big amount of chemicals and whole process is highly dependent on experiences.

This is why scientist of Palacký University developed AquaChip.
Description: Aquachip is fast and cheap test for determination of composition and unwanted contamination of water. Tester in the form of small card enables without deeper knowledge and experience performing of basic analytical analysis, which usually requires a lot of chemicals and equipment. AquaChip itself is miniature system that allows detection of common ions, dangerous chemicals, toxic metals and determination of other characteristics, such as pH. It is necessary just immerse AquaChip into water and result occurs during a few seconds. The result can be moreover read by smartphone. In principle, AquaChip is an analogue to commercially available urinal or pregnancy tests. The added value lies in usage of smartphone as reader with additional information, such as norm, flawlessness or harmlessness, etc.

Nowadays, we have test ready for basic analysis of following parameters: pH; NH4+; NO2-; Ca2+; NO3-; Fe2+; PO43- a Fe3+. Moreover, it is possible to extend testing by Ni2+; Pb2+; Cd2+a Hg2+.

We are also working on biological analysis. Currently the research is in the phase of experimental laboratory design, which needs more research and experiments for routine usage.
Commercial opportunity: We have detected three major market segments for AquaChip:

1) Determination of quality of service water from wells. In the case of usage of such water pools it could be possible to develop collaboration with producers of pool chemicals and added to the smartphone evaluation application recommendation of chemistry dosage, etc.

2) Composition determination of aquaristic water. Just like in the case of pool chemistry, it could be possible to collaborate with producers of aquaristic chemistry and take advantage of evaluation vie smartphone for recommendation of dosage of chemistry for adjustment of individual parameters.

3) Orientational determination of the presence of dangerous pollutants in drinking water. In this case, AquaChip would be a pocket tester that can be used, for example, in nature or on the road.

Technology validation and implementing it in real environment. Testing the technology outside of the laboratory and its adjustment to external conditions.

  • TRL 5 represents a state where the results of the real environment tests are known and there is an idea of how to deal with the problems found (if any)
  • TRL 6 is a state where a fully functional prototype already exists and is capable of fulfilling all its functions
